FIELD MARSHAL GUENTHER VON KLUGE (1882–1944)

An officer of the German Wehrmacht and Commander of the German forces in the West. A vacillating supporter of the German Resistance, he was recalled to Berlin for a meeting with Hitler after the failed coup of July 20, 1944. Thinking that Hitler would punish him as a conspirator, he committed suicide by taking cyanide.
